Vera Auerbach is the principal clinical psychologist at Gymea Lily Psychotherapy Centre. She founded Gymea Lily Psychotherapy Centre in 1994 and has been operating it in the Sutherland Shire ever since. Vera is passionate about providing a treatment approach that acknowledges the internal world and unconscious motivations within people and has felt that the Sutherland Shire was missing this.
Vera Auerbach trained as a Psychologist at the University of NSW, majoring in Psychology and Philosophy (BA Psych) she then moved to Sydney University and completed a Master in Psychology (MA Psych). She completed her clinical training at Wollongong University (M Clin. Psych) with a special interest in mother-baby issues.
Vera undertook and completed a two-year counselling training with the Institute of Counselling 1989, and a two-year Family Therapy Diploma 1991. Vera has been an accredited Supervisor for Intern Psychologists and Clinical Psychology Registrars with the NSW Registration Board (now APHRA) since 2000, as well as a University Placement Supervisor.
Academically trained as a Clinical Psychologist and Psycho-analytic Psychotherapist, she works in private practice, lectures casually and also supervises. Vera trained as a Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist 1994-2004 and is a member of the Institute for Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (ICAPP).

Background:
Vera has a number of areas of interest, attachment issues, in particular. She trained in the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) in 1999 and the Ainsworth Strange Situation Procedure (SSP). This followed her work in the area of Postnatal Depression and reproductive issues concerning women in general (e.g. IVF, Endometriosis, infertility and miscarriages).
Vera has worked in Adult Psychiatry as a Clinical Psychologist since 1990. She also worked at Westmead Hospital as Clinical Psychologist on the Early Intervention Team, part of the Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatry Department (Redbank House). Referrals for attachment issues, settling, and crying are most welcome, as are separation difficulties and oppositional behaviour.
Vera’s main focus concerns diagnostic and clinical issues. She specialises in working with children under 5 years of age, and adults wanting psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Vera is happy to see individuals (children, adolescents and adults), couples or families.
Vera has extensive experience in working with children and adolescents in a number of frameworks. At Redbank House she worked with children under 5 years of age and their parents specialising in treating cases of non-organic failure to thrive, sleep/feeding problems and behavioural/compliance problems in infants and toddlers. She worked with mothers and newborns and trained in Watch, Wait and Wonder, as well as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT).
Vera offers psychoanalytic play therapy to children, as well as parent-infant psychotherapy. She has worked as a child sexual assault counsellor in the past, as well as working with adult survivors of Child Sexual Abuse. Vera provides long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy services when appropriate and runs long-term groups.
Vera was a founding member of the Group Analytic Society (Sydney), and was President from 1998 – 2000. She was involved with the Parent Infant Foundation of Australia (PIFA), from 2001-2003. Vera facilitates long-term psychotherapy and mothers groups. She currently conducts 2 long-term groups.
Vera has always tried to promote health care for all and remains committed to providing the best possible standard of care at reasonable rates. Her fees are negotiable for this reason. She is also an approved Victim Services/Homicide Support therapist.
